Dory Funk Sr., He said, "Your name is Mortimer."

There Was Once a Place Called Camelot

Friday November 22nd 1963 Morning Where were you?

"Hello you stupid idiots." Those were the first words spoken by newcomer to the Amarillo Territory, Don Duffy. The next words were those of Dory Funk Sr., Owner of the Territory, "Stop, cut, cut Stop the promo, we can't be calling all of our fans stupid idiots. They all have the privilege of changing the channel and of not coming to the wrestling matches. Lets do it again."

"I am going to take that bald headed old man Dory Funk Sr. and whup him" ----- "Stop, cut, cut Stop the promo, Don't call me a bald headed old man because it is going to make you look real bad when this bald headed old man beats you."

I watched and laughed, so did the other wrestlers, Harley Race, Sir Nelson Royal, Ricky Romero, The Viking, Sputnick Monroe, Bull Ramos, Killer Karl Kox, and others who were, "doing promos," that morning. It always took a while for newcomers to the territory to get used to the rules, Dory Funk Sr.'s rules. It was my first year in the business and we were at Channel 10 in Amarillo, Texas for interviews. All wrestlers working the territory were present and promos were made for insert into the different TV markets belonging to the territory. Amarillo, Albuquerque, Pueblo, El Paso, Abilene, Odessa, and Lubbock.

When promos were over my brain was usually fried. The object as always in wrestling is to put people in the building and in those days you were paid according to the gate that you could draw. We motivated the fans with our work in the ring and our talk on promos. I had done promos for ten different matches in ten different cities that day. My plans were to go home, relax and take the rest of the day off playing with the kids, doing small chores around the house and then I would leave home at 5:00pm to make the trip to Littlefield, Texas for the show that night.

Friday November 22, 1963 Afternoon Where were you?

It almost didn't strike me as real when I first heard the words on the telephone from my mother. "My god Dunk, They have killed the President. He went to Dallas and they shot President Kennedy." ----

Ask not what your Country can do for You.... But what you can do for your Country.....John F. Kennedy

Mankind is our nationality.....Wells

The only thing that will make evil survive, is for good men to do nothing... Abraham Lincoln

Friday November 22, 1963 Evening Where were you?

We were wrestling in Littlefield, Texas, just 90 miles from Amarillo. Dory Funk Sr. and myself (Father and Son Tag Team) vs. Handsome Harley Race and Don Duffy, The people were stone cold silent. My father said to me, "I know it is a bad day, but we have got to do something to entertain these people." I agreed with him, but a heavy cloud hung over the whole country." I didn't know what we could do.

My father walked over and took the microphone from the ring announcer. "Ladies and gentlemen, our opponent tonight calls himself Handsome Harley Race. (The building was silent) If you look in the wrestling magazine from New York, Wrestling Review, you will find that his name is not Handsome Harley Race. His real name is Mortimer. Harley eyes got as big as silver dollars as he ran around the ring denying that his name was Mortimer and the fans began the chant, "Mortimer, Mortimer, Mortimer." It was the beginning of one more great night of wrestling at the Littlefield Sports Arena.--

November 1963 Issue of Wrestling Review had a feature story of Harley Race when he first broke into the wrestling business in New York wrestling for the infamous outlaw promoter, Jack Pheiffer as, "Mortimer."

After midnight Where were you?

I crawled in bed and cried.

Early in the morning on July 16, 1999 I was watching MSNBC when the news broke that JFK Jr.'s plane was missing on a short flight from Fairfield New Jersey to Martha's Vineyard Mass.

On the evening of July 18, 1999 the US Coast Guard shifted it's mission from search and rescue to search and recover. John F Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren Bessette are presumed dead in a small plane crash.

Our country had lost another Kennedy great who might have been......

Like so many Americans I gave thought to how fragile life is for all of us.

There once was a place called Camelot......
