Dory Funk Jr. - Getting in Shape for the "Match of a Lifetime"
NWA World Champion Jeff Jarrett
From Bob Ryder's column on NWA/TNA
web site:
Dory Funk Jr won the NWA World Heavyweight Title on February 11, 1969
in Tampa
FL. Almost 35 years later, on January 25, Funk will step in the
ring to face Jeff Jarrett
in the main event of a show being held in Ocala FL. Funk has
been mostly inactive in
recent years, concentrating on training future stars at his "Funking
Conservatory", and
his last high profile match in the United States was against Nick Bockwinkel
at Slamboree
in 1993. The Funk/Bockwinkel match stole the show that night
as the two former
champions put on a wrestling clinic. Funk has made appearances
in Japan, but has only
made rare appearances in the ring in the United States since the Bockwinkel
match.
Ask any of his students, though, and they'll tell you that Funk can
still handle himself
inside a wrestling ring.
